Sequoiadendron giganteum 'Glaucum' - Blue Giant Sequoia

Sequoiadendron giganteum 'Glaucum' - Blue Giant Sequoia

Another form of the Giant sequoia that has striking blue-green foliage on a narrowly pyramidal tree. The more-or-less fastigiate branches will have the best color in spring with the new growth. After 10 years, a specimen will measure 16 feet (5 m) tall and 4.5 feet (1.5 m) wide, an annual growth rate of 1.5 to 2 feet. This form is purported to be cold hardier than many other giant sequoia cultivars. This form was first described in 1860 by Christoph Friedrich Otto in Hamburger Garten. There are those in the conifer society that believe that it is highly unlikely that the tree described in 1860 is the tree that is common in cultivation today. The photo above was taken of a specimen in Czech Republic garden. After 10 years, this tree will be at least 16 ft. tall. Hardy to zone 7.
