Years ago I was given cuttings of this exquisite species by the late Peter Schick of Fort Bragg, CA. I have never seen this species available anywhere since. I have come to learn that R.kingianum is synonymous with R. zeylanticum, a sub species of R. arboreum. It is also related to R. nilagiricum, another subspecies of R. arboreum. The cultivar R. 'Noyo Chief' is considered a form of the species R. nilagiricum. Our plant of R. kinianum is 8 ft tall after 25 years in the garden, and the flowers blood red, coming out in January or February. This species is native to Sri Lanka. Hardy to zone 7.
