Japanese Painted Fern - Athyrium niponicum 'Pictum'
One of the first plants that people think about for a shade garden are ferns. This one would be my first pick, as it is so striking in a shady setting. The Japanese Painted Fern adds not only some bright colors to the shade, but also an interesting texture. The finer texture is captivating, especially when planted in groups that make a statement. The triangular, silvery fronds have an arching habit with purplish midribs, making them variegated ferns.
