Always asked about in our gardens, this shrubby Beach 'Torulosa Purpurea' has almost pure black leaves throughout summer and into the fall, when they begin to turn black-red. When light colored foliage plants are positioned in front of this magnificent plant, the effect is startling. Grasses like 'Evergold' will really 'pop' when planted in front of this Beech. Rarely available, but now we have a few. I have listed this plant in our 'tree' catagory even though it grows more like a shrub. This is so it will be grouped with the other Fagus cultivars.
