This famous Louisiana iris sports purple-black velvety flowers with gold highlights, is native to the southern USA, and likes to grow in well-watered gardens, or naturally wet areas. This would be a great choice along a pond edge, or in a boggy spot. Flowering starts in late spring or early summer. The showy flowers are up to 6 inches across.
