Dianthus x Allwoodii - Allwood pinks

Dianthus x Allwoodii - Allwood pinks

Bred in the 1920's by English nurseryman Montague Allwood when he crossed D. plumarius, the cottage pinks plant with D. caryophylus, the carnation. The resulting hybrid makes a clump eventually 3 ft wide, but only 8" tall. The flowers are mostly double pink with a light fragrance. The gray-green foliage is noteworthy as it contrasts well with so many other green plants. The flowering will last for months, especially if dead-headed. The name Dianthus comes from the greek words dios meaning divine and anthos meaning flower. Hardy to zone 6.
