Abies koreana 'Aurea'

Abies koreana 'Aurea'

Golden form of the Korean Fir, unless grown in shade, where it will be more green than gold. Discovered by Lohbrunner nursery in British Columbia in the 1950's in a batch of seedlings. This tree grows more globose when young, but later develops a leader and becomes a broad upright tree. The shorter needles emerge a bright yellow in spring, but fade to a dull light yellow-green by winter. The purple cones, typical of the species, contrast nicely with the golden foliage. Grows 3 - 6 inches per year, resulting in a broad dwarf tree 3 ft tall x 2 ft. wide in 10 years. Hardy to zone 5. Best color results from growing in full sun, however if summer temperatures are high, some protection is recommended.
